I’ve been watching COURT TV and I’m amazed on how DNA analysis can help tracked down criminals. DNA samples can help to quickly track down offenders and solve crimes if law enforcement agencies have access to the most up-to-date testing capabilities. In news stories, the successful use of DNA to solve crimes abound.
Such example was Gary Ridgway, a.k.a. the Green River Killer. It is one of the most egregious serial killers in American history in which authorities linked him through DNA evidence to at least 49 deaths of women in Portland and Seattle area. The Green River' killings, DNA evidence provided a major breakthrough in a series of crimes that had remained unsolved for years despite a large law enforcement task force and investigation.
DNA tests have the potential to produce powerful and convincing results, but that potential is not always realized. Careful evaluation sometimes reveals significant problems that render DNA evidence far less probative than it might initially appear.
DNA generally solves crimes in one of two ways. First, in cases in which a suspect is identified, a sample of that person's DNA can be compared to evidence from the crime scene. The results of this comparison may help establish whether the suspect committed the crime. Second, in cases in which a suspect has not yet been identified, biological evidence from the crime scene can be analyzed and compared to offender profiles in DNA databases to help identify the perpetrator. |
