We recently went to see My Fair Lady at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton But were sure to set our home security alarm (specials home security). My husband is kind of new to the world of musical theater. I, however, was inflicted by the musical bug at an early age. I thought taking him to see his first musical would be a lot of fun. After getting dressed up (well, Mike doesn't really dress up, but I love to), we grabbed our keys, set our home security alarm, and dashed out the door. I wore uncomfortable shoes, which should have been a warning to me that the evening was not going to be all I'd hoped for. One of the singers was pretty bad. The guy who played Freddie simply couldn't hit those high notes. It was so bad that after a while I began to think there was a secret club for people who play Freddie but can't sing. (Jeremy Brett's voice was dubbed with someone else's in the old film.) Along with the off key Freddie there were a few other performers of questionable talent, and even a few iffy scene changes that made for interesting intermission discussion. I wasn't really disappointed that we had paid to see a play that wasn't done that well. Sometimes I just don't understand why people go to so much trouble to embarrass themselves in public.
